Copper

Large view Copper ore

Copper, one of the most useful metals known to man, as a natural material is not only used in engineering but also, as an essential trace element, is a fundamental component in the existence of virtually all higher life forms. The element, which is present in the Earth's crust generally in the form of ore but in rare instances also in metallic form, over the course of the development of flora and fauna has become an important constitute of all living organisms. To keep healthy, man also requires a balanced daily intake of this trace element. Over the course of evolution, both man and all other higher organisms have developed a perfect regulatory system for the uptake and excretion of this metal. In a healthy body, this regulatory system ensures that sufficient copper is taken up or excess copper is excreted again from the body.

Furthermore, as a natural material, copper offers further particularly important properties for long-term development:

  • excellent cold working properties

  • aging resistance

  • high thermal conductivity

  • sufficient mechanical strength
